A Network of Cancer Centers Our network of Cancer Centers throughout the region is dedicated to providing opportunities for you and your family members to participate in a tremendous number of cancer research trials sponsored by the National Cancer Institute and numerous other leading institutions and organizations such as:
- Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG)
- Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG)
- Children’s Oncology Group (COG)
- National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP).
As a result of our research commitment, our Centers were the first in the region to incorporate the use of radioprotectors during radiation treatment to protect normal tissues, and have been involved in investigation of intravascular irradiation to help prevent repeat “clogging” of arteries at risk in the heart and legs, and in dialysis shunts. In addition, our physicians have invented numerous devices used for the treatment of cancer patients. Please peruse the tabs to the left to see the types of treatment we perform and the types of things we treat.
Don’t be surprised if you see some folks wearing name tags from other medical facilities in our Cancer Centers: FROG is dedicated to teaching, with participation in the Florida Community College—Jacksonville Radiation Therapy Technology (RTT) School, as well as physician Residency and Fellowship training programs affiliated with the Mayo Clinic and University of Florida, among others.
A comprehensive range of specialists including Medical Oncology, Urologic Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Pediatric Oncology and GYN Oncology specialists, as well as Clinical Psychological and Genetic Screening Services support the Centers. FROG manages a world-class PET/CT diagnostic, treatment-planning, and follow-up program, and also runs its own dedicated Cyclotron to generate the isotopes for these studies. In addition, our Centers are tied to a network of diagnostic, laboratory, x-ray, and treatment facilities, as well as nutritional, pastoral, home health care, visiting nurse, and physical therapy services.
The Williams Center The Williams Center has a long history of excellence on the First Coast: The first high energy linear accelerator in Florida was installed here in 1978, and it later was the home of the first High Dose Rate (HDR) implant program, hyperthermia program, intraoperative brain tumor and head & neck tumor radioactive implant program in the region. FROG physicians have been performing prostate seed implants since the 1970’s, and have been performing world-leading intraoperative dosimetry to improve the accuracy and safety of these seed implants since the mid 1990’s. The center was the first in the region to offer frameless stereotactic radiotherapy/radiosurgery for brain lesions, and now is the home to the only Gamma Knife Center between Orlando and Atlanta, and one of only three Novalis Tx Body Radiosurgery machines in the Southeast. The Center is also the nexus of a referral hub for total skin electron therapy for a rare lymphoma type known as mycosis fungoides. We perform nearly all the pediatric radiation therapy in the region, and are an approved site for Total Body Irradiation (TBI) for both pediatric and adult patients undergoing bone marrow transplants. We have also pioneered the used of intravenous radioactive medicines to hunt down cancers via the bloodstream.
Elsewhere in the network, FROG provides access to revolutionary pinpoint accuracy treatments via a dedicated Tomotherapy Unit in Tallahassee, as well as Cyberknife centers in Jacksonville, Brandon, and Sanford, Florida.
