Brain Implants
Certain patients with aggressive brain tumors, who already have been treated with surgery and external radiation, are candidates for permanent placement of radioactive Iodine-125 seeds. These seeds are inserted in the operating room under general anesthesia, using an applicator developed at the Williams Cancer Center. These seeds emit radiation to a limited area for almost one year, and then become inactive. Patients can safely interact with other people after discharge from the hospital.
