General Cancer Treatment Instructions |
|
During the course of your Radiation Therapy treatment several weekly procedures will be followed to ensure the highest quality of care.
The following is a list of these procedures:
- Weight: Your weight will be checked weekly. During radiation therapy it is important you maintain your health and weight.
- Weekly Doctors Assessment: Once per week our Doctor will see you to assess your health and monitor your side effects, if any, from the radiation treatments. (Our Doctors are always available should you need their assistance at any time during your treatment).
- Nursing Assessment: Our Nurses are always available to assist you with questions or to help manage side effects during treatment. If you are having a problem there is no need to wait until your weekly Doctor visit. The Nurses are very experienced in managing the side effects of treatment and will usually be able to help take care of the problem right away.
- Weekly Port Films: X-ray films are usually taken once per week in the treatment room to ensure accuracy of the treatment setup. The x-ray's that are taken do not indicate how you are progressing! They are only for positioning and setup. Should the Doctor order a "Diagnostic X-ray" you will be asked to go to the Radiology Department and have a Diagnostic X-ray performed.
- Lab Work: Your blood may be drawn one or two times during the course of treatment depending on the Doctors orders. The purpose of the lab work is to monitor the effect of radiation treatments on normal blood cells. The nurse will instruct you when to have your blood work done.
- Treatment Machine Service: The linear acceleration used to deliver your treatment is a very precise and technologically advanced piece of equipment. It will occasionally need to be serviced or upgraded. This may require a temporary hold on all treatment. Rest assured, if any major upgrade occurs during your treatment course which takes several consecutive days, we will make arrangements for you to continue therapy at one of our network of locations, in Jacksonville or Palatka. This would be temporary until service is completed and comprehensive quality assurance procedures are performed.
