Head and Neck Treatment Instructions
  • See Dentist before starting treatment -use fluoride as directed.
  • Do not scrub treated area. Use only mild soap and a soft cloth. Allow water to flow over area. Pat dry. Do not use powders or creams in the treatment area unless authorized by the Nurse. You may shave with an electric razor only. Stop shaving if skin becomes very irritated.
  • You may use clear colorless aloe vera gel to entire area twice a day. Hydrocortisone cream may be used three times a day if itching occurs.
  • Keep treated area protected from sun exposure with clothes and hat or umbrella.
  • Eat food warm but avoid hot food and drinks. Avoid carbonated beverages. Avoid rough or spicy food such as gravies and sauces, tomatoes and citrus fruits.
  • DO NOT use commercial mouthwashes. Use baking soda rinse below only.
  • Eat frequent, small meals. About 6 a day. Use liquid food supplements as necessary to maintain nutritional status. Use ice cream, popsicles and liquid nutrition to supplement food intake.
  • Carry a container with water at all times. If at all possible add one drop of lemon juice to each cup of water. Always have fluids ready while eating.
  • Brush gums and tongue with a baby soft toothbrush.
  • Use cough drops as needed but avoid eucalyptus flavored drops and medicines.
  • Elevate the head of the bed 4-6 inches if having reflux symptoms.
  • Mix 1 teaspoon of salt and 1 teaspoon of baking soda into a quart of warm water. Swish, gargle and spit 1 tablespoon before and after meals, first thing in the morning and at bed time.
