Prostate After Treatment Care

We normally see our patients for a routine check-up at 4 to 6 weeks after completing treatment. In an effort to provide you with the most efficient care, routine follow-up with us will generally not be required after this visit. This is only provided that you see your other physicians regularly and contact us if you have any problems or concerns. We suggest that you continue to see your urologist and/or primary care physician at least twice a year for a prostate cancer check up to include:

  1. PSA blood tests - PSA should be performed at least twice a year for the first 5 years. Of note, it is not uncommon for the PSA level to bounce up and down during the first 2 years following treatment. It sometimes can also take up to 2 years for the PSA to reach its lowest level. We ask that you please forward a copy of all of your future PSA results to us so we can continue to track your progress. In addition, please call us should you ever experience a rise in your PSA level.
  2. Physical exams - Digital rectal exams to feel the prostate should be performed by your physicians regularly. Please call us should you be informed of an abnormal exam.

While severe side effects following prostate seed implants or external radiation treatment are quite uncommon, occasionally they can occur as late as 2 - 3 years AFTER completing treatment. It is very important that you notify your other physicians of your prior radiation treatment BEFORE you undergo any treatments or tests from them. Please call us if you experience any of the following problems:

  1. Persistent anal or rectal complaints- should you develop anal or rectal pain, bleeding, or discharge that lasts for more than a few days time, please call us. It is important that if this condition is being evaluated by another physician, that they be informed of your prior radiation treatment BEFORE you have any procedures done.
  2. Persistent urinary complaints - should you have any persistent urinary problems such as blood in the urine or difficulty emptying your bladder, or be unable to empty your bladder, please contact us. It is important that if this is being evaluated by another physician, that they be informed of your prior radiation treatment BEFORE you have any procedures done.
