Registration Upon your initial visit to a Center, you will register as an outpatient. You will need to bring your insurance cards with you for your appointments, as well as any authorizations if required by your insurance plan. You will meet with billing specialists at this time, and it is important to let the billing personnel know of all your insurance policies, including any cancer policies. The billing office will file these policies for you at the appropriate time. This registration process can take 15-30 minutes, so please arrive early for your appointment.
Billing Information Radiation therapy is a complex treatment consisting of many tasks performed by a number of people. Some of these tasks and people are obvious to you; others work behind the scenes. The expense of radiation therapy is similar to other specialized treatments, such as major surgery. Most insurance companies will cover the cost of the radiation therapy. If you do not have insurance, or have only limited insurance, discuss this with our physician so your special case can be reviewed.
The bills you receive will depend upon the facility at which you are treated. For instance, if you are treated at one of our hospital-based facilities (Baptist Medical Center, Memorial Hospital—Jacksonville, FL etc.), you will receive two separate bills. One bill is for the physician’s fee, which includes consultation (review of your records), your treatment plan (determining the method and dose of radiation utilized), field setting (determining the area to treat with specials x-rays or scans), daily therapy (management and supervision of your daily treatments), verification films (to verify that the correct area is being treated), and special blocks (custom-fabricated or generated blocks used for blocking the area not treated). You will also receive a separate hospital bill for the use of the equipment, supplies, nursing, and treatment staff, your treatment plan, daily treatments, verification films, and blocks/molds.
At our other free-standing Centers you will receive bills from just one entity that will include both the physician’s and Center’s charges together. Be sure to provide us information on all your insurance policies including cancer policies. We will file all of these for you initially at no charge. If other policies are found later, there will be a charge for additional staff coordination.
